2009 model year info: The hardtops

MINIThe MINI Experience Continues:

Go-kart-driving fun, an interior that provides the maximum amount of car in the minimum amount of space and a myriad of personalization possibilities keep the 2009 MINI Cooper and Cooper S on top of the small-car premium segment as sales continue to grow, bettering the previous year’s.

The body of the latest generation MINI – introduced in 2007 – boasts evolutionary development from the iconic 1959 Classic Mini, while the interior, including styling cues are evocative of the original and contain the latest technological advances found today. And powering either the 2009 MINI Cooper or MINI Cooper S are a pair of four-cylinder engines resembling the original MINI’s in cylinder number and placement, transversely over the front axle, but far more efficient, cleaner and powerful.

Performance plays a major role in providing driving fun and the four-cylinder engines of the MINI hardtops deliver. The turbocharged 1.6-liter version in the Cooper S produces 172 horsepower, eclipsing the magical “100-hp-per-liter” measure revered by enthusiasts. This translates into 0-to-60 mph acceleration in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 139 mph. The naturally-aspirated engine in the Cooper, also 1.6 liters, features variable valve control and accelerates this agile two-door athlete to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, with top speed of 126 mph.

[Editor's note: Guinness, my earlier 1275cc/1.3 liter "64" Mk1 Mini was clocked at 115mph and erm, it went from 0-60 very quickly.. never counted off how many seconds it took.. but with a tighter turning radius and the overall chuckability the classics are known for, it sure beat the pants off the new MINI in the twisties.. not quite as impressive off the line though, to be sure..no turbo, supercharger, ECU, or any of that]

Despite their much higher level of dynamic performance and sporting character, both MINIs return superior fuel economy, with the MINI Cooper S having a preliminary 2009 EPA fuel economy estimate of 26 City/34 Highway mpg for a combined preliminary EPA estimate of 29 mpg. The MINI Cooper is even more efficient with preliminary EPA 2009 estimates of 28/37 City/Highway for a combined rating of 32 mpg.

[Editor's note: Yep, almost as good as a classic Mini. It's a shame, in fact almost embarrasing that with all this high tech gadgetry the MINI does so poorly in the MPG department.. but then whoever said sports cars were good on mileage? Compared to even the best MPG 2009 Mustang V6, that's still great mileage! Uh, that's just not fair. The MINI has more back seat room, better MPG, and is less expensive than the Ford.. but I digress..]

Both engine variants are fitted transversely under the bonnet and power the front wheels. Composite – instead of conventional cast – camshafts and weight-optimized crankshafts are part of the lightweight concept of the aluminum power units. Fuel consumption, in turn, is optimized by a volume flow-controlled oil pump and an electronically-controlled water pump for the coolant circuit – two technical features previously limited to larger and more expensive model segments.

The MINI Cooper and the MINI Cooper S both come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Both models can be ordered with an optional six-speed automatic transmission that features a sport mode and includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

With its low center of gravity and wide stance that moves the wheels to the extreme corners of the car, agile and nimble driving behavior is guaranteed as is that go-kart feeling. The modified structure of the body shell as well as a wide range of safety features, in turn, help to ensure the 2009 MINI meets or exceeds all accident-protection requirements. In a recent NHTSA test, MINI excelled in all aspects with four- and five-star ratings.

Compared with the MINI Cooper, the MINI Cooper S has a more sporting suspension set-up, and as an option both models are available with sports suspension for an even higher standard of driving pleasure.

The EPAS Electrical Power-Assisted Steering helps make the MINI even more nimble and agile on the road, as speed-related assistance ensuring low steering forces when parking and precise control at high speeds. And when the standard Sport button is depressed, EPAS offers a sportier mode that specifically increases steering forces for an even more direct driving experience.

MINI Rooftop NYC closes its doors

[from BMW AG, 9/19/08]

After 10 days tightly packed with design roundtables, yoga sessions, fashion shows and open-air parties, the MINI ROOFTOP NYC community event is ending.

The MINI ROOFTOP NYC opened its doors for the last time on 13 September to offer a platform to creative artists from New York City and from all over the world. All told, around 9000 people visited the redesigned roof area at 465 Tenth Avenue (corner of 36th Street) during the 10-day festival of culture.

MINI was the host on the roof of a building in the Hell’s Kitchen district of New York that had been redesigned on the basis of the international “Creative Use of Space” campaign and the associated website http://www.MINIspace.com. The lifestyle brand had conceived the MINI ROOFTOP NYC initiative with the aim of giving established and up-and-coming artists a platform of their own where they could develop their creativity. MINI ROOFTOP NYC was a place where artists could be appreciated and be together. The event offered the public the chance to attend exclusive events featuring pioneers and icons from the worlds of music, art, design, fashion and wellness. Many of the events over the 10 days were freely open to the public. New York City’s young, creative scene was able to get together here with thinkers from all walks of life.

During the 10-day series of events, around 9000 visitors were welcomed to the roof or the 6th floor lounge of MINI ROOFTOP NYC. In addition to the many creative artists there, famous celebrities such as Michel Comte, Diane von Fürstenberg, Kirsten Dunst, Rob Saunders, Ali Hewson, top models Helena Christensen, Irina Lazareanu, Agyness Deyn, Minipenny, Litabelle, Doutzen Kroes and Julia Stegner, singers Cassie and Solange Knowles, StarLord, stylist Rachel Zoe, Peaches Geldof, the band MGMT and Mary-Kate Olsen visited MINI ROOFTOP NYC.

Further information about MINI ROOFTOP NYC and the “Creative Use of Space” initiative is available at http://www.MINIspace.com. You will find further information about MINI at http://www.MINI.com. Did you notice we threw in names of our own Miniologists in there? Just seeing if you were paying attention ;) There’s a cool flickr group of pics located here:

Classic Mini Tech: SU carb plug

SU Carb with nothing on itJohn Koo (of sracer.com) recently explained one of the quirks of classic Mini ownership, the emissions test port on the SU carburetor — well, most people don’t even give it a second thought, there it is on a small pipe hanging off the end of your carb. They use it for smog testing, as if the cars we drive ever get smogged (since the are so old). When the carb is not attached to a test apparatus, there’s usually a rubber plug stuck on it to block the port. If that happens to fall-off, get lost, or whatever, you have a potential problem. You see, this is where stuff gets into the carb, you get an improper mixture then way down in your engine you can experience detonation.

The Wikipedia states in it’s usual reference like verbiage “Detonation in reciprocating engines (sometimes called engine knock) is the uncontrolled supersonic explosion of the fuel-air charge, and may be caused by excessively high combustion chamber temperatures. It may occur prior to the firing of the spark plug in Otto-cycle engines. High compression ratios or high temperatures can cause the flame speed of combustion to exceed the sound barrier, resulting in an explosion or detonation and a pressure shock wave.”

Although that sounds relatively cool in a mythbusters sort of “I like to blow stuff up” scenario, it doesn’t bode well for a Mini’s little high-compression engine. Wiki goes on to describe the issue in better detail:

“Detonations are extremely destructive to common piston engines, and may result in mechanical deformation of the cylinder walls, piston rings, holes blown through the top of pistons, or cracks in cylinder heads. Detonation can also burn out a spark plug, reducing or eliminating its ability to produce a spark. Detonation is most destructive if it occurs during times in which the explosion forces the piston downwards while it is traveling upwards, which relates to engine timing.”

What does that mean to you? That means you probably want to do something about this hole in your carb so as to help avert tragedy from occurring, even if the likelihood isn’t in the extremely high probability, it is definitely there.

Enter the plug. This was designed and fabricated at SRACER PRODUCT for your Mini. It’s fairly small and straight forward to install, and can be done in less time than it takes to read this article.

Step 1:

Grab a good pair of vise-grips and pull the little pipe out of the carb.

Be sure you get a good hold on it, sometimes they are a bit stuck and need some elbow grease to get out, but they will come out.

If that fails, you can always tap in a screw or bit and extract it out that way, but for the most part it just comes right out with some force. If I had pics of someone messing it up and getting the pipe all pinched up in there or what-not horrors people can do to their Minis, I would include it here, but I don’t have such a picture, so you’ll just have to use your imagination on that..

This picture doesn’t seem to format correctly in the blog and I have no idea why, but there you go, lots of white space. Anyway, let’s move on, shall we?

this is where the plug goesStep 2:

Well now that you have that gaping hole there, you want to tap in the SU carb plug to patch it up.

This is a fairly permanent operation but it’s not like you are going to mess it up, since it’s so straight forward to push it in.

These pictures show someone pulling it out by itself, but generally you do this with the carb already installed on the vehicle, because all of that stuff bolted in helps hold the manifold and carb and all that, making it much easier to do.

If you want to do this to a SU carb before you put it in the engine, hmm, probably either want to wait until it’s on there, or if you really can’t wait, then get a buddy to hold the manifold or whatever stuff for you so that you can do it (unless you happen to have 4 arms, then, well you’re good to go on your own).

You’ll also notice in these photos there’s a stand-off and a heat shield on there where it connects to the manifold, yep that’s another SRACER PRODUCT invention.

Su carb mounted on 1968 mkII Mini with sracer bitsThe spacer helps give you more clearance for the carb in the engine bay (for mounting your filter) as well the heat shield, well I hope I don’t really have to explain what that does :)

One more pic before we close this bit of tech up for the moment and go grab a homebrew from the fridge.

Here’s the plug, installed on a car (that’s Henley, the Morris MkII from other videos and pics!) and I am so glad I won’t be worried about detonation at worst and suffering performance at least..

More Mini tech articles like this are in the works, so stay tuned to Miniology!

Italian Job Charity Run (Los Angeles, CA)

Hello to all!

Are you ready for another fun filled MINI event to raise money for charity?

Last year’s MINI Cooper Italian Job Charity Run was a big success, thanks to the friendly, supportive, and generous people that attended our first event.  We all had fun pretending we were part of the story of the Italian Job movie by driving around Los Angeles together and “going for the gold”.

We have spent a longer time than we thought we would in planning the 2nd Annual MINI Cooper Charity Run Event.  Again we will use the themes from the Italian Job movie, but we are going to expand that which everyone loved and change some of the other venues.  We will have new and improved gold bars for each participating car, prize giveaways, and motoring swag.  This will again be an all day event with the proceeds going to the charity of the winner’s choice, this time with a break for lunch.

Date:  Saturday, October 25, 2008
Cost:  $40, of which at least $32 will go to the charity of the winner’s choice and up to $8 as needed will go to the administrative costs like prizes, gold bars one for each registered car, etc.

This time the event is limited to 100 cars and the event will be here very soon, so sign up today! Also help get the word out by telling all your MINI Cooper contacts about this charity event.

For full details visit our website at www.MiniCooperRally.com.

You can watch the six minute video promoting the event and view the event flyer here:  http://montroseminicooperrallies.org/current_event_main.html

Here’s where you can sign up: http://montroseminicooperrallies.org/squad_member_sign_up_main.html

Let’s Motor for a Cause, instead of motoring just because!

Hope to see you at the Rally!!

Mini run and show highlights – London to Brighton 2008

We pulled this one off Fraspel’s YouTube page, great synopsis vid and TIJ soundtrack to go with it!

If anyone else from across the pond wants to share videos and coverage of the UK or Ireland shows in a more official capacity (or from anywhere else in the world for that matter!) please do let us know!

From the archives: How to build a classic Mini

From Lord Steve’s YouTube/ADO15, email peter AT burdon.org for info, as he has this video available on DVD. Here is a snippet showing Longbridge then Cowley (Oxford) where they made the classic Minis, not an easy car to build. Several folk have commented about re-starting a Mini production line. Peter requests you leave comments on that (via the YouTube page).

Editors Note: MiniMania has bought the rights to produce the Mini Moke in kit (or mostly completed) form. Is someone taking the reigns to produce the classic Mini again?
