IMM 2012: world’s largest gathering of classic Mini enthusiasts is about to kick off

It was in 1959 that the Mini broke out onto the scene as a classless car, quickly took the world by storm and soon became a motoring icon admired by one generation after the next. Nowhere is the close bond between the classic Mini and its followers more apparent than at the International Mini Meeting (IMM).

The 36th edition of this traditional event is about to get under way, and still the classic Mini continues to transcend boundaries: this year marks the first time that the IMM is being held in Hungary. From 24 – 28 May 2012, fans of this compact British classic will descend on the resort of Balatonfüred on the northern shore of Lake Balaton.

The event’s hosts from MINI Club Hungary have put together a wide-ranging programme packed with thoughtful details, all organised with help and support from various quarters, including the MINI Clubs International Office. Two floating pedal-powered MINIs will be launched out onto Lake Balaton, for instance, while MINI wicker beach chairs will invite visitors to soak up the sun, and professionally restored classic Minis from the BMW Group Classic collection will be on show on the lakeshore alongside the brand’s current models.

Fans and drivers of today’s MINI have been equally welcome at the IMM events for years now.

The inaugural IMM took place in 1978 and has since evolved into the world’s largest gathering of classic Mini owners and friends. Some 4,000 of the brand’s fans, including representatives from over 200 MINI Clubs in countless countries, have registered for the IMM 2012. Enthusiasts from Portugal, Finland and Ireland are planning to drive there in their own Mini, and registrations have even been received from as far afield as Seattle in the US. For the day when everyone arrives, MINI Club Hungary has prepared a highly entertaining rally where the objective is not to be the fastest but to master the final stage before the journey’s end along a particularly picturesque stretch of road.

Bungalows and caravans provide accommodation for anyone attending the IMM, while the extensive campsite in Balatonfüred offers enough room for visitors to park their classic Mini and pitch their tent right next to it. The campsite grounds, furthermore, are the venue for numerous spectacular activities revolving around the classic Mini where the name of the game is sporting competition and having fun together. Plans include setting up a parts and accessories market, staging slalom races in the classic Mini, as well as a competition for the most stunning specimens from all model series, the classic Mini that is truest to the original, the oldest driver and the oldest car. Wedding bells will also be ringing amid the ranks of MINI enthusiasts when two members of the host MINI Club take their vows at the event arena before starting their new life together in true style at the wheel of a classic Mini – followed by a celebratory convoy of some 200 further examples of this British classic, whose drivers have registered in advance for the occasion.

PS Minis Invites You To The Tulip Rallye

The MG Car Club NW Centre (MGCCNWC) in the Puget Sound area puts on this fun gimmick drive every year in the beautiful Skagit Valley. They get hundreds of participants ever year. I’ve seen as many as 80 MINIs/Minis at one point. It seems to vary each year with the price of fuel and the flower production. Still, the drive is super fun!

For the last 30 years, the MG Car Club Northwest Centre has hosted the Tulip Rallye, an automobile tour of the Skagit Valley region of Western Washington State. This year on April 21st, 2012, the rallye starts in the Mount Vernon area, but you never know where it may take you from there. Through colorful tulip fields, windy country roads or scenic shoreline drives, it’s everything you need for a beautiful daytime tour of the region.

We have designed this event so that each car club, with a minimum of five cars entered, will be eligible for a first place prize to be awarded to the top performer within their club. Individuals not associated with a particular car club will compete in the “open” category.

The Tulip Rallye is intended to be a fun event. It’s not a time/speed/distance event, but a light hearted gimmick rallye with trivia questions written into the tour guide. It’s fun for the whole family. Some clubs now make this rallye their April driving event.

There are restaurants along the tour route, but they are often very crowded, so we recommend that you pack a picnic lunch to eat along the way.

We look forward to your club’s participation in the 31st Annual Tulip Rallye.

Here is the REGISTRATION FORM.

Thank you and please feel free to contact me with any questions.

MINI USA chooses Classic Mini for new “Gifts come in all sizes” campaign with Banana Republic

Today MINI USA and Banana Republic announced the launch of “Gifts come in all Sizes,” a campaign that is not only fun for shoppers, but also gives back to local communities this holiday season. As part of the campaign, Banana Republic customers will have the opportunity to win one of five MINI Coupe vehicles (five one-year leases) and donate toys to the Boys and Girls Club of America that MINI Coupes will deliver from select Banana Republic locations.

No word on if the classic is going to get raffled, but I guess not..

On December 1, 150 Banana Republic stores across the USA will celebrate the launch of the campaign with holiday parties for customers. During the parties, attendees will receive instant game pieces. Once opened, the game piece will reveal either a winning discount or a one-year lease of a MINI Coupe.  As part of both companies’ commitment to give back to those in need this season, four stores will be collecting toys for the Boys and Girls Club of America. From December 1 through December 15th, residents in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and the Bay Area can donate at the following Banana Republic locations: The Grove (Los Angeles), Rockefeller Center (New York), Woodfield Mall (Chicago) and Corte Madera (Bay Area).

An extension of the campaign continues on Banana Republic’s Facebook page with a “Gifts Come in All Sizes” game, which will be live from December 2 – 24, 2011. Fans are encouraged to play the game daily for a chance to win a year-long lease for a MINI Coupe, Virgin America flights, Banana Republic shopping cards and donations to the Boys and Girls Club Of America under the fan’s name. Every day is a new chance to win a gift from Banana Republic and MINI USA this holiday season.

“This partnership with Banana Republic is another example of MINI taking a different approach to our marketing efforts,” said Tom Salkowsky, Manager of MINI USA Marketing. “It allows us to engage in helping our community, and extend that opportunity to customers and fans alike. It also ensures MINI is visible in some of the highest traffic retails locations this time of year, building brand awareness and introducing our newest model.”

“Banana Republic is excited to be partnering with MINI this holiday. Our ‘Gifts Come in all Sizes’ campaign is an extension of the community service our associates already do in stores, bringing joy to those who need it most,” said Chris Nicklo, Vice President of Marketing, Banana Republic.

The next bit of news – and I’m sure everyone has been chomping at the bit on this one – what are we planning??

Our motivation this year is to give AMVIV attendees more of what they might be looking for on their MINI Vacation in Vegas. We’re focusing our efforts on what makes you folks choose a trip to Vegas over some other destination. And what might those things be? Have a look at some of the things we’re coordinating and maybe you’ll get the idea -

** A MINI Poker Tournament or a MINI Slots Tournament – They both sound good to us, do you have a preference of one or the other? Let us know.
** A Scavenger Hunt down on Glitter Gulch – Everyone loves visiting Freemont Street when they come here: wandering in and out of casinos all at street level the way Vegas used to be. There’s a new attraction down there, too – the Freemont Flightlines. Talk about a rush! We’re planning a Hunt that’s sure to bring lots of laughs.
** An Autocross with the Las Vegas Sports Car Club of America down at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway
** The Boot & Bonnet Show will return, so attendees can browse all the vendor swag and mods
** Speaking of vendors… We’re planning a Vendor Mixer this year up in the Palace Station Parking Garage – A chance for us to get together and chat, show off our cars, and socialize with the vendors with all their so-cool after market offerings, complete with food and lots of liquid refreshment.
** We’re planning fewer scheduled runs this year, so there is less conflict within event. Attendees won’t necessarily have to choose which things to do, and miss something good because they can’t be in two places at once (maps will be provided for a variety of other places, in case attendees would like to venture out on their own)
** Show & Shine Car Show – This year, the plan is for the Car Show to incorporate both official judging and attendee voting. We’re trying to help a very important local charity through the Car Show, SAFE House http://www.safehousenv.org/, so there will be a small, tax-deductible fee to take part in the Car Show
** The Infamous Strip Cruise – well, we’re trying on this one. We’ve been told if ‘they’ catch us congregating on The Strip for something, we can expect warnings, tickets… you name it. We’re trying to come up with a plan, that will get us back down there similar to how we have in the past – so we can convoy down that traffic light filled lane amongst the towering resorts of the modern Las Vegas Strip J
** Chartered Boulder Dam Tour – we’ve got a package deal, folks. They’ll give us a van, bus, buses – depending entirely upon how many attendees sign up for this. We’ll enjoy a chartered ride down to the Boulder Dam in comfort amidst the honking and stop and go of what could be a whole lots of cars, join a guided generator tour of the Dam, and have time to walk out onto that brand new Boulder Dam Overpass Bridge you’ve all heard so much about. For this adventure you can leave your MINIs at the garage, and let someone else do all the driving.
** Party at The Palace – Banquets are a thing of the past, so we’re planning a Party for Saturday night. We’ll have prizes to giveaway, White Roof Radio will be there, maybe a DJ, and again there will be food and lots of liquid refreshment available. Hammering away at all the details on this, but we’re hoping it will be a MINI night to remember.

This is only a partial list, we are also looking at a possible night out on the town and another poker run. The list could change as we get closer to the event. We are also contacting a variety of venues in town, to try and arrange for ticket/admission discounts at attractions, where they choose to cooperate with us. Things like The AdventureDome at Circus Circus, The Las Vegas Mob Experience at The Tropicana, MINIature Golf, go-karts, CSI at The MGM Grand. We’re hoping to get some good options for those of you that want to venture out on your own.

One other change worth noting, we’re making the switch to an electronic brochure for the event. Sorry, but it’s time to move away from the commemorative booklet. We’re going to embrace modern technology, and use our website, Facebook, Twitter and maybe even a customized AMVIV app for smartphones to keep you apprised on the schedule of events, and any changes to it once the event kicks off. Look for a special AMVI8 Flickr page as well – to capture all your photographic memories of the weekend in one handy place for all of us to share.

That’s about all I’ve got for you now. Keep on the lookout for the next update – and plan on AMVIV8 Registration to open in early February. See you in May at The Palace!!
