As you may have read in an earlier post, REME is starting some plans to have a summer MINI/Mini Event in San Francisco next summer (September 2008). This would include a midnight MINI/Mini run through the streets of SF. Lombard Street (the crookedest street in the world), the Broadway Tunnel, The Presidio, Coit Tower, Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Bridge, Treasure Island, Ocean Beach, and Fisherman’s Warf. For the midnight run I found a path that can take us to the top of Lombard St. (crooked part) and we can drive down without having to stop & go on the steep hills. You can take Hyde street north and turn down Lombard. It’s slick. Norm (aka MINI Pooper) thinks he can work out a route that will avoid steep hills with starts & stops.
Non-driving attractions would include:
a Giants baseball game at AT&T Park
Cable car rides through SF
a visit to the Carnelian Room atop the Bank of America building (53rd floor)
a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge
a visit to Union Square at night with all the lights
a bite of chocolate at Ghirardelli Square on Cannery Row
an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista near the cable car stop
the cable car museum
shopping in Chinatown
watching the sea lions at Pier 39
a BBQ dinner on Treasure Island with photo shoot looking back at the SF skyline
a picnic in Golden Gate Park
a stop at the Cliff House above the Pacific Ocean
a midnight bonfire on Ocean Beach
and lots of other KOOL things.
(StarLord recommends a shopping and/or dining excursion through JapanTown, group photos at the Peace Pagoda, maybe some Karaoke and Sake Bombs for those on foot?)
This would be a Friday, Saturday, Sunday event. Need enough days to squeeze in all this stuff.
For those who are not too interested in baseball, an alternate cultural tour could be offered as well: deYoung Museum, SFMOMA/ The Metreon Theater at Moscone Center, Palace of Fine Arts, The Exploratorium, etc. The new Asian Cultural Museum near City Hall is supposed to be exquisite!
(StarLord confirms, yep, it is! And plenty of parking $ available)
Of course, a stop on Saturday night at Bimbo’s on Columbus would be fab!
Event Name “Magical Mystery MINI Tour 2008†Dress of the day would be paisley print long sleeve collard shirts or tie-died t-shirts, gold chain necklaces or beads, bell bottom jeans, wide belts, Beatle boots or leather sandals, don’t forget to wear some flowers in your hair.
We must make a stop at Haight & Ashbury Streets on this run.
This would take co-operation and help of several of the local Mini clubs, vendors, and finding accommodations. San Francisco has soooo much to offer and is a beautiful city. September is the best time of the year with the Indian summer. I think SF would draw people from outside our area. We would still have baseball for those interested in taking in a Giants or A’s game (or both). There is also so much more to see and do for those that aren’t interested in baseball.
Day drives to Santa Cruz and Marin Headlands/Mt. Tamalpias/Stinson Beach.
Throw in your ideas, feedback, & interest.
This will take a concerted effort of several local clubs, namely REME, MOASF, NorCal, Mavericks, Sierra Nevada MINIs, Mid Cal MINIs, PDX, plus some help from MC2 Magazine, MINIUSA, BSSP, Mini Mania, Seven Enterprises, along with co-operation of the City of SF, Treasure Island, Local Press, and a bunch of MINI/Mini Vendors.
If you are interested in participating and helping, please post threads on other local club & national sites. We will need all the help we can get.
We have gotten positive responses from MINI clubs in Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, So Cal. So let’s put on a MINI Event to remember!
